Dispose of Furniture in Korea: Fees & Pickup Guide

Getting rid of an old mattress, sofa, or desk in Korea isn’t as simple as leaving it outside your building. If you want to dispose of furniture in Korea the right way, large items almost always need a bulky waste application and a collection fee first. Nobody will just pick it up off the curb.

Maybe you’re moving out. Maybe you’re replacing an old couch, or packing up before leaving the country. This guide explains how disposing of furniture in Korea works, using Seoul Metropolitan Government pages and district office pages. It covers Seoul only — other cities and districts set their own rules.

What Counts as Bulky Waste in Korea?

In Korea, bulky household waste is called daehyeong pyegimul (대형폐기물). It generally means items that cannot go into a standard household garbage bag.

    Common examples include:

    • Mattresses and bed frames
    • Sofas and armchairs
    • Desks, tables and bookshelves
    • Wardrobes and cabinets
    • Large chairs and other household furniture

These items need their own collection arrangement. They don’t go out with ordinary household trash. For everyday garbage, food waste and recycling, see our guide, Korea Trash Sorting: A Practical Guide for Foreign Residents.

How to Dispose of Furniture in Korea: Step by Step

Most districts offer an online application. Details differ by district, so treat these steps as a general outline rather than an exact script.

Step 1. Find your district office

Search for your district name together with “대형폐기물 배출신고” (bulky waste disposal application). Residents of Jongno-gu in Seoul, for example, can use the Jongno-gu bulky waste application website.

Official Jongno-gu bulky waste application: https://jongno.go.kr/waste/pc/web/main/main.do

You can review the disposal instructions, check item-specific fees, and submit an application through this website.

Step 2. Enter your item details

Select the item type, quantity, and size where required. Add your address and the date you want it collected.

Step 3. Pay the disposal fee

The fee depends on your district, the item category and sometimes its dimensions. Check the charge shown on screen before you pay.

    Step 4. Attach the confirmation

Some districts give you a disposal confirmation to print and attach. Others use a report number that you write on the item yourself. Follow your district’s instructions after payment.

Step 5. Put the item in the designated place

Move the item to the approved collection place at the instructed time. In an apartment complex, ask the management office where large items go.

The Seoul Metropolitan Government’s guide for foreign residents describes the same general process: report the item, pay the fee, attach the receipt and leave it for collection.

Why the Process Differs by District

Seoul districts set their own bulky waste rules by local ordinance. In a November 2023 news release, the Seoul Metropolitan Government said that report and confirmation methods differ from district to district.

It said it would encourage every district to switch from printed confirmations to a report number written on the item. It also said it was studying fee guidelines to reduce the differences between districts.

The release doesn’t say when each district completed that change. Check which method your own district uses when you apply.

How Much Does It Cost to Dispose of Furniture in Korea?

Fees are usually set per item, not per bag.

Item What Can Affect the Fee
Mattress Size and your district’s fee category
Sofa Number of seats and type
    Desk Size and design
Wardrobe Dimensions and number of sections
    Bed frame Size and components
    Bookshelf Dimensions and item category

There’s no single nationwide price. Each local government keeps its own fee schedule, so two districts may charge different amounts for similar furniture. Check the price list for your district before you apply.

Can You Throw Away a Mattress in Korea?

Yes. Mattresses are generally handled as bulky waste. Before you dispose of one, work through this order:

    1. Check your district’s category for mattresses.
    2. Confirm whether the mattress and the bed frame need separate applications.
    3. Pay the fee shown for that item.
    4. Attach the confirmation or write the report number as your district instructs.
    5. Put the mattress at the designated collection place on the date you chose.

Don’t assume a mattress can go out with ordinary household waste.

Where Should You Leave Large Furniture?

The collection place depends on your housing type and district rules.

    Apartments (아파트)

Ask the apartment management office (관리사무소) where large items go. Some complexes have their own rules for moving bulky items.

Villas and studio apartments (빌라 / 원룸)

Follow the collection place your district gives you. It may be in front of the building or at a designated waste area.

    Officetels (오피스텔)

Check with building management first, especially if elevators or shared collection areas are involved.

Don’t leave furniture on a sidewalk or in a shared area before checking local requirements. Items without the required confirmation, or placed outside the designated spot, may not be collected.

Can You Skip Printing the Confirmation?

In Jongno-gu, residents without a printer can write the payment confirmation number, item name, disposal fee, and collection location on a piece of paper and attach it to the furniture.

Other districts may have different requirements. Always follow the instructions provided by your local district office.

What About Refrigerators, Washing Machines and TVs?

Large household appliances may qualify for a separate free collection service run with the Seoul Metropolitan Government.

    • Examples of eligible items: refrigerators, washing machines, air conditioners and TVs
    • Reservation by phone: 1599-0903
    • Reservation online: https://www.15990903.or.kr/
    • Not available on Sundays or during the Seollal and Chuseok holidays, according to the Seoul page

Not every appliance is eligible, so check the service’s item list before you book.

This free appliance collection is separate from paid bulky furniture disposal. Don’t assume a mattress or sofa qualifies for free pickup.

Useful Korean Words for Furniture Disposal

    Korean English
    대형폐기물 Bulky waste
대형폐기물 배출신고 Bulky waste disposal application
    수수료 Disposal fee
    배출장소 Disposal place
    배출일 Disposal date
    신고필증 Disposal confirmation
    수거 Collection
    관리사무소 Building management office

If you’re not sure where to leave an item, ask your building manager: “대형폐기물은 어디에 버리면 되나요?” (Daehyeong pyegimureun eodie beorimyeon doenayo?), which means “Where should I put bulky waste?”

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can I leave an old sofa outside my apartment?

Not before you check the requirements. You generally need to register the item and pay the fee before you put it in the designated place.

How long does furniture collection take?

Collection times vary by district. For example, Jongno-gu states that bulky waste collection may take approximately 2–5 business days after the disposal date, excluding weekends and public holidays. Delays are possible depending on collection conditions.

Check your district’s official schedule before placing furniture outside.

Can foreigners apply for bulky waste collection online?

Yes. Foreign residents can use their district’s online application where it’s available. Language options and payment methods differ, so contact your district office if you can’t finish the application.

What happens if I leave furniture without registering it?

Unregistered items may not be collected, and unauthorized dumping may lead to penalties. Wrong item details or an underpaid fee can also stop the collection.

Can I give away furniture instead of throwing it away?

Yes. If the furniture is still usable, you can give it away or sell it through a local secondhand platform. That can avoid disposal fees.
